Special Educational Needs
(SEN)

The Special Educational Need (SEN) involved in this Differentiation centred Case Study was ASD; Autism and Asperger’s. For this SEN Case Study, I was asked to identify a student who had a SEN within one of my year groups, communicate with staff supports and my co-operating teacher, as well as research and build evidence-based reference material through the use of Brookfield's Four Lenses model, those four lenses being: self, colleagues, student, and theory. The aim of using this model was to insure I gather information for this study as well as contextualise the students individual situation. This focus and research allowed me to differentiate as required for this student's specific need, as well as be more aware of how to differentiate for all students within my classroom

I place a huge emphasis on differentiation throughout my lesson plans as I feel it is important that I understand how and why we differentiate within a classroom and its benefits students. This differentiation can be equally important for the general cohort of students, some of whom may learn in different ways. As I myself have a mild learning disability, dyslexia, I have a strong interest in the area of differentiation and adapting my practice in any way I can to benefit the learning experience for my students. I have thoroughly enjoyed this case study as it has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the different learning difficulties and SEN within a school setting and prepared me greatly in dealing with this appropriately. students with special educational needs and work with them in a more compassionate and informed manner.
