Statement of my Research

I conducted a number of research-based assignments during my Professional Master of Education in Art and Design with Digital Media at the Limerick School of Art and Design from 2021-2023. This research includes: an Action-Research report, Short Course, SEN Differentiation Case Study, and an Extended Policy Casing essay.

As part of my final year in this PME I completed a research project entitled ‘How the Use of Different Modes of Feedback Influence Students Engagements and Confidence: Teacher, Peer, Self’. Through this research project I utilised different types of feedback as a form of formative assessment in order to give students the opportunity to improve their work before summative assessment takes place, aiming to influence students engagements and confidence in a positive way. The visual art project at the centre of my action-research project was ‘Cubism-Inspired Portraits’ which aimed to bring students on an experimental journey in art and artmaking as they push the boundary of portraiture and allow themselves to be inspired and led by Cubism techniques and abstraction.

Differentiation strategies in teaching and learning were also implemented during my first placement while undertaking a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Case Study to accommodate this student’s particular needs. I was able to examine the new Junior Cycle Framework in detail by planning units of learning based on the values and skills students should develop during their first three years in post-primary education. While taking part in a group project I was also able to help develop a new short course which can be integrated into the Junior Cycle to help further some of the key skills emphasised by the new Specifications for Junior Cycle.
